It’s always difficult for me to do these introductions. I am not one to talk about myself; I usually talk about the adventures I’ve been on and the cars I’ve found, not really about myself as a person.
It’s really not all that interesting, but it’s what I do that is interesting: Driving around the country documenting cool cars in neglected situations.
Here’s a small peek into my world and the way I evolved into The Auto Archaeologist. It’s no secret among car collectors and enthusiast that the pursuit of “lost” cars is what drives many gearheads. Finding an abandoned, restorable car is one of the most common dreams among collectors and a touchstone for the hobby.
Top shows like the Pebble Beach Concours and Chicago’s Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals have added special classes devoted to original and barn find vehicles.

About the Author
Ryan Brutt, "automotive archaeologist," travels the United States documenting lost and abandoned automotive gems. He is a contributing editor to Hot Rod magazine and organizes the "barn finds" class for the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals. He is the author of Motortooks' Amazing Barn Finds and Roadside Relics. He is based in Skokie, IL.
